will the hypnosis tape for dieting help with self esteem and confidence? Dr. Johnson, I had a question regarding my order "To Diet Down Right". In the first section where you describe the effects of the tape... "For reduction of hunger feelings, reduction of nagging thoughts and yearnings, increased pride and self-esteem and self-discipline." I was wondering if the increased pride and self-esteem would involve an overall effect. I have been over weight all of my life and got made fun of for 21 years from kids at school and people in general. My self-esteem is very low and I have no self confidence. I was just wondering if that part of the tape would help me in that aspect as well. Response: Pretty much all my hypnosis tapes and CDs blend in ideas about feeling better self esteem. The diet down right tape focuses on sticking to diet regimens that people are trying to stick to. If you are working on sticking to a diet -- long term or short term -- then this is a good tape for you. If you want to focus more on self esteem and self confidence, though, other tapes might be more helpful. The way hypnosis works is to help you have a better attitude in parts of your mind and thinking that are "unconscious." By "unconscious," we mean parts of your thinking that are actually conscious and thinking but that you aren't aware of being conscious and thinking in that part of your mind where you can think to yourself. The mind is like a big company in a big office building with all sorts of workers in all sorts of offices, working, thinking, analyzing, deciding. We only feel ourselves thinking in the top penthouse offices. Like in any big company, sometimes the workers at lower levels can have negative attitudes or goofy ideas and they can resist the memos that come down from the head office and insist on doing their own thing. You go through a lot of crap as a kid and a lot of the workers in the lower offices can be angry, negative, hopeless. The part of you in the head office can decide that you want to diet or do something positive for you and then you find that for some reason you feel negative, way easily give in to urges to eat cake and ice cream, sabotage your efforts in fifty weird ways. You can have parts of you so convinced that hope is just the road to greater unhappiness that you can't seem to hold onto hope more than a few minutes. Or you might find that a part of you in those lower offices must be very angry with all the failures and takes any opportunity for success to punish you with failure. Lots of weird conflicts can get going. What hypnosis does is speak to those parts of you that work at those lower levels of your mind. When someone has a little glitch in their thinking that promotes self-sabotage, hypnosis can eliminate that glitch in one or two sessions (or in the case of recordings, one or two listenings). In the case of people who have gone through all sorts of crap and have all sorts of hurts, twists, glitches and glum deep in their thinking, hypnosis can give you a small but significant boost in positive attitude, self control, strength, self esteem and confidence. Hypnosis can force greater changes quicker but they tend to be very frightening and they tend to get strong reactions in weird, unpredictable ways -- like if you woke up and didn't recognize yourself when you went to comb your hair -- so we generally stay away from forcing radical changes like that. It just doesn't do anything good. So, the bottom line to all this lengthy discourse: the diet tape will help boost your attitude and confidence and your ability to diet. How much will probably depend on a lot of factors like genetics, strength of habits, attitudes toward self, success, slenderness, fear of success, etc. Try the diet tape and if it fixes everything you're done. But I would expect that it will help but not turn your life around because of all the feelings you have about your self, fears of success, comfort with failure, hope, life, challenges, being a victim of life vs. a warrior and fifty other ones that have to do with the rest of how your life has been going. If you like the format -- my voice, the somewhat weird way it sounds to have someone talking that way to you a little differently in each ear, etc. -- then either purchase other tapes one at a time or together that focus on how you relate to yourself (self to self partnering), sustaining hope, self esteem and resiliency when life is tough (healing tree 2), confidence (to be comfortably confident). These tapes will help you work with yourself better, work on the issues of life with more comfort and confidence, help you feel more like a warrior in life instead of road kill, and help you feel more confident even if you don't get a lot of offers to pose for Playboy and Penthouse. Life is a lot of trials and pressures, smiles and treasures and it either has no purpose at all -- in which case working on your figure can be a lot like working on cancer where you need to decide whether treatments are harder on the quality of life than they are worth -- OR life has a purpose and we go through the struggles we go through for reasons we may not understand but that we can guess at -- and you can ask yourself whether you think the purpose of life is to get under 125 lbs or the purpose of life might be to have faith in God and be as good a person as you can, no matter what you weigh. After you try the diet tape and see if you like it -- nothing in life is one size fits all -- consider adding the other three tapes to your "library" and plan to use them for a few listenings until you feel much better about yourself and then set them aside until you feel like working on self esteem, self confidence and hopefulness again. The other three tapes -- especially self to self partnering and healing tree 2 -- may actually make it more likely that the diet tape does anything for you (depending on how much you might actually fear slimming down, deep inside). A lot of people find that what they need to work on is self esteem and how they deal with life before dieting even has a chance. Work a bit and let yourself get to a better place about yourself and your life and then work a bit more. In the same way you learned math and writing -- you can get better and better until you are proficient. Dr. Johnson |
